How to Make an Eye Pillow

Eye pillows are perfect for relaxing and/or Shavasana. Shavasana is that part of yoga everyone loves at the end of class. You lay down on your mat and end your practice with a mix of relaxation and a meditation.

  • Fabric of your choice 9 in./8 in. (I used cotton fabric from Walmart I found on sale)
  • Needle and thread that matches your material
  • Fabric pins
  • Scissors
  • Rice (I used brown rice)
  • Essential Oils of your choice (I used Lavender and Cedar Wood)
  • Bowl, spoon, measuring cup (1 cup)and funnel.

Side Note: I used a sewing machine but you can hand-stitch this if you do not have a machine.

The picture above is a rough idea of what will happen. Yes, I drew it on my whiteboard. You will fold the fabric right sides together so that all you see is the wrong side of the fabric. Pin it in place so that it doesn’t move around when you sew.

Giving yourself 1/2 in. seam allowance, Starting sewing from the folded edge. NOTE: you will not sew all the way around. You will need to leave a gap so that you can turn it right side out. I recommend not putting the gap on a corner because you will have to hand sew the gap closed. In the picture above I show a dotted line this represents where you will sew. After you have finished turn it right side out.

Pore one cup of rice into a bowl. Drip 8-10 drops of your favorite essential oil or oils. Stir with spoon. Put funnel into pillow and pour rice into the pillow. Hand-stitch the opening closed. I forgot to film myself doing it so I am including a youtube video of a tutorial.

You can use these at cooling packs by placing them in the freezer. They can also be used as heating pads. Just put it in the microwave for 30 seconds or so.

Now you can have your own eye pillow you can take to yoga class or use on the couch to relax. Hope you found this helpful.
